Emma Genis
Formulation Expert Scientist
What made you dedicate yourself to science/R&D?
I have always been fascinated by science since I was a child. In school, some of my favourite subjects were Biology and Chemistry, which led me to my degree in Pharmacy at the University of Barcelona. While I was attending university, I also spent ten months as a research fellow at the University of London, working with a brilliant professor who introduced me to the world of Pharmaceutical Development.
After starting my career in the Industrial Area of a French pharmaceutical company, I got the opportunity to join R&D Almirall, precisely in the Pharmaceutical Development area. This allowed me to expand my knowledge in this area and strengthened my conviction to specialize in dosage form design as a formulator. At Almirall, I fulfil my passion for pharmaceutical research and development every single day.
How your work relates to helping patients in their daily lives?
In my current job, I am leading the development of robust, stable, and effective formulations. The transformation of the active substances into suitable pharmaceutical dosage forms for administration and release is critical in the development of new drugs. In simple terms, as formulation scientist, I am responsible for turning chemistry into products that will deliver drug molecules to patients affected by dermatological diseases.
