Types of Acne
Occasionally, acne vulgaris may present variants.
- Acne Conglobata: Acne conglobata is a severe form of nodular acne that occurs more commonly in young males. It usually occurs in the back, chest and buttocks, but can also appear in the face and other areas. It is characterized by large, draining lesions, sinus tracts and severe scars.
- Fulminant Acne: It is an acute condition characterized by nodules or plaques that come off easily, erosions and ulcers.
- Acné Excoriée: It usually occurs with relatively mild comedones or inflammatory papules leading to erosions and scars. It occurs more commonly in young women.
It may be associated with an underlying psychiatric disorder, and the treatment may also include antidepressants and psychotherapy. - Infantile Acne: It usually starts between the ages of three to six months and occurs due to the presence of high levels of androgens produced by the immature adrenal gland in girls, and the immature adrenal gland and testicles in boys. Androgen levels decrease between one and two years of age, which means an improvement of acne.
